2026 Women’s Camp

The Kenworthy Kyokushin Karate Dojo in Whanganui proudly hosted a Women’s Camp over ANZAC weekend, bringing together 32 women from the Mas Oyama Kyokushin Karate Dojos throughout New Zealand. “It’s been 10 years since we’ve brought our women together, and we had women attend from as far south as Dunedin, and as north as Auckland,” organiser of the camp, Jess Shaw, explained.

With participants ranging from just nine years old through to 72 years of age, the camp was a powerful display of the Kyokushin spirit, as well as the fortitude, perseverance and determination of our women in Kyokushin.

Technique excercises

Over the course of the weekend, attendees trained hard in the traditional components of Kyokushin, as well as experiencing complementary activities from guest instructors, such as Yoga, Qi Gong, and Queloroz Brazilian Jujitsu. “Our final sessions composed of tameshiwari (board breaking), and kumite (full contact fighting),” says Jess. “Both of these were challenging sessions that took determination and spirit.”

The weekend highlighted just how strong, capable and inspiring women can be in martial arts, while also showing that karate is truly for all ages and abilities. “We had women who’ve been training in Kyokushin for more than 20 years, beside our younger ones who are just starting. We all supported and encouraged one another through the weekend, creating an empowering, safe and memorable experience for everyone.”

Balance and move

The senior instructors and organisers were thrilled with the turnout, the positive feedback, and have no doubt that the camp will continue to grow in future years.
